America vs the Rest of the World

America compared to the rest of the world.

I read a fascinating article a few days ago. It was about how America compared to other countries in the world. Far from being the number one in everything, the only thing it was number one in was in having the greatest military capacity in the world. It spent more on arms than all the other countries of the world combined. In everything else, it was a long way down the list. Also, in the 30's, America was number two on the list for having the least deaths for mothers during childbirth. Now, it is number forty eight. So, this hub is comparing America to other countries in the world. Further, please note that nothing in this article is either my opinion or someone else's opinion. It is all based on hard figures and academic research by professionals who know what they are doing. Opinion has nothing to do with it. These are facts. All the links are references demonstrating the facts.

Health System
America’s health facilities are not the best in the world. Hospitals and medical facilities in Australia, Europe, Canada, and New Zealand, as well as some in the east, like Singapore and Thailand are far better. They have a short waiting list equal or better facilities. In addition, their health care is paid for by business and taxes. Everybody gets free health care. In the United States, only Medicare fits this model.

Vacation Time
The United States is the only country amongst the industrialized nations where paid vacation time is not mandatory. In South Africa, three weeks paid vacation leave plus payment for all public holidays plus three weeks paid sick leave is enforced by law. In the UK, they have the same, only it’s four weeks leave and in Europe, it’s an average of six weeks leave. In some countries like Finland, it’s approaching two months vacation time. Australia, Israel, Morocco and numerous other countries get a mandatory three weeks paid leave each year. Of course, in addition, all public holidays are paid double time, by all companies, if staff are required to work.

Education
University in most countries of the world is either free or heavily subsidized. However, not as many people get to university. In Germany, for instance, only 10% qualify for university. However, as most people know, the German economy dominates the European economy, and the European economy is almost the size of the American and Chinese economy combined. In Germany, trade schools, in which students are taught skills that enable them to earn a good living, flourish. If one has a trade, one does that trade well, and one is highly respected for it. This is different to the United States model where there is no respect for those that do not have a four year degree. Ironically, the American four year degree is not highly thought of elsewhere in the world as the standard of it is very poor. However, the American Masters degree is considered one of the best in the world.

Finland has the best education in the world.

Debt
America has the highest debt rate in the world. This is because an enormous percentage of American tax dollars go towards supporting the military. Each United States citizen would need to contribute about $45,000 to get rid of that debt. This compares to about $21,000 per capita for Canadians. However, although European countries have a lower overall debt, because they have fewer people, the per capita rate is much higher. For instance, In the UK, the per capita rate is $150,000.

While the Wikimedia list is outdated, it does show that while the US debt is the highest in the world, the per capita repayment lies in the medium range. Countries in eastern Europe have very little debt.

Unemployment

The differences in unemployment globally is not worth mentioning. While Germany’s unemployment rate may be 2% lower than Americas, it is still high. This is the result of the manufacturing processes moving to the east. It is not coincidental that the eastern European countries which still retain their factories are the least in debt.

The Best Constitution
Yes, there are some countries that do not have freedom of speech, but they don’t tend to be well developed countries. All major industrialized countries have freedom of speech. The best constitution in the world is the South African constitution. It was designed at Codesa and had a team of international lawyers working alongside 19 different parties in South Africa. Together they set up the best constitution in the world. India has the second best constitution in the world, providing coverage for its multitude of different people.

Essentially, the American constitution has become extremely limited in the modern world. In the past forty or fifty years, other countries have moved on. America has not. America still retains a constitution that was relevant for the 19th century but not for the 21st century. Today, the South African and Canadian constitutions are imitated by other countries. The American constitution is way down the list. It has become all but irrelevant.

Media

In America, the most informed news viewers are the ones that watch the Colbert show and the least informed are the ones that watch Fox News (This is not my opinion. Everything in this article has been taken from other sources.) Canada has the highest literacy rate with 99.38%, so it’s the most educated in the world. In America, Iranians are the most highly educated.

Finland is the Best Country in the Entire World to Live in

Best Country to live in

The best country in the world to live in is Finland. The second best is Australia. Third in line is Japan. America ranks number 11 according to Newsweek who did an extensive study involving many different illuminaries in establishing that fact.

ADDENDUM

US Technology is behind that of Europe
On a personal note, when I first came to America in 2003, I was shocked to find that so much of the technology was behind that of England and Europe. In fact, nothing in America was ahead of any other country that I had lived in. In the past twenty four hours, I have read two articles that detail this. Perhaps, the reason why this has not been spoken about before is the fury with which Americans decry this when one mentions it. And, perhaps, the reason it is coming out of the woodworks now is that with the crash in the economy, the slow realization that things are not right, people are more willing to listen. See attached links for articles.

Dual Economy in America

As mentioned above, over the last while, as it becomes that the American economy is not going to recover, more has been written about what is happening here. The issue of poverty in America is approaching that of third world countries. More than 40 million people are using food stamps to buy food. Nearly 20% of the people of New Mexico are on food stamps. That is an extreme level of poverty. Consider, as well, that by the time one qualifies for food stamps, one is all but homeless. The accompanying article was published yesterday - May, 27th, 2011. Wake up, America.

Firstly to disprove your "European economy is almost the size of the American and Chinese economy combined" fact, the European economy is about 16 trillion, the US is 14 trillion, fine. But the EU alone has almost twice the population of the US.

Then again, what is this about the healthcare not being free being a bad thing? The UK has a massive healthcare tax on the income of people, I think it is something like 60 percent when combined with other taxes as well, and the quality of healthcare there is terrible.

The part about the best country to live in, I have been to Finland, Australia (Multiple times) and even Japan. Japan is too overcrowded and everyone focuses on work all the time, Finland has a tiny population because no one would live in that frozen nation, its HDI is 0.841 while the US is 0.901 and although Australia is beautiful, it is nowhere near to being as good as the USA in many or even most aspects.

The next point you made about the Universities in the USA, the fact that they are not free or heavily subsidized is what makes them great and the quality of education that some of the best ones offer is the best in the world, the university of Pennsylvania offers the best Business majors in the world for instance. Anything that is free and provided for by the government is ussually bad, that is one of the best things about the USA.

South Africa has the best contitution because it had a team of international lawyers working on it? We are talking about the same country? The one where football players have to wear bullet proof vests when out of the hotel? That is pretty funny, the American consitution has survived for 300 years and led to the Worlds most powerful country, which it still is.

You are talking about the unemployment rate in the US being two percent higher than the ones in Europe, that is beacause the current financial crisis basically didnt do ten percent of the damage in Europe (As a whole) as it did in the US.

The paid vacation also shouldnt be mandatory in any part of the world, except for maternity leave, the company should always be the one to decide whether to provide this to their workers or not.

Last point to be made, I am not from the US, I am from your beloved eastern Europe which has little debt compared to the US, and trust me, all of us here wish we could go and live in the US.

@Jan... Nothing in the artilce above is either my opinion or my 'theory.' Everything has been taken from other sources. The quote below is taken from the article at the URL.

"Economic strength The EU, with its 27 member nations and a half billion people, has become the largest, wealthiest trading bloc in the world. It produces nearly a third of the world’s economy – nearly as large as the US and China combined."

That may be true but so much posted is either borderline "true" or heavily opinionated. Don't just pull from one source. Just because 60 minutes says Finland is the coolest place to live doesn't make it true. Hell just because anybody says it’s based on anything doesn't make it true. South Africa has the best constitution? Again opinion, opinion, opinion. Education is the only more accurate item on your list. I mean Thailand has better healthcare then the U.S! Maybe the one I never went to when I lived there but I don't think countries where people live in straw huts have anything better then the U.S, no offense it is a nice country with great people. But come on that was even opinionated. In reality there are so many variables for these categories that’s not even put into play. I think you’re a victim of the classic "believe half of what you see and none of what you hear".

Jess 14 months ago

And did you actually see the same video on Finland as I saw on your page!!! Who would want to live there!!? The country with the highest suicide rate in the world is the best country to live? Do those people look like their living it up or what! LOL ;)

@ Jess. If you had bothered to check the links, you would have found that none of it was opinion. All of it was research based on many different parameters.

Yes, of course, I wouldn't like to live in Finland. That was what the last video was about. It was meant to be humorous.

Your comments lead me to believe that you didn't study the links within the piece. You only skimmed through reading this.

If our military spending is the highest in the world it is because we are always being the guardian angel to every country that has trouble. I wish other countries would quit expecting that of us. Then the citizens that were helped end up resenting us after they expected our help.

@Barbara. I have a question. How come the citizens of the country that you always help are oil rich countries and the countries that aren't helped, like Zimbabwe and Burma, aren't oil rich?

Inane comments like Jan Karov makes, like the one about Australia not being "nowhere near to being as good as the US in many things," is a comment that could be turned the other way, "that the USA is nowhere near as good as AUSTRALIA in many things." By NOT quantifying your inane ramblings this is the sort of commene one has to reply with. Additionally I dont think that Barb Kays comments come up to much worthiness...for heavens sakes you account for nearly HALF the worlds defence spending (43%!!) next best..China at 7.6% with stats like that do you really think that it'

s spent to help OTHERS out? Come on! The USA is the most demonic adversary when it comes to getting what IT wants and fields force and offers democracy or death to those that just want to be left alone in their own land. Ohhh just a comment ON the European economy - it consists of HOW MANY countries? The system supports the weak countries and the recent members, take them out and have a look at it's population and economic stats then - also consider it's military spending - NO the USA has lost it;s way. The people are lied to ( No weapons of mass destruction) locked up without charge, torture is an allowed method of interogation and beuracratic intimidation and corruption is rife. Good people are being left on the scrap heap - Katrina, housing forclosures, high unemployment and the military spending HAS to go on because it takes up SO much of the production capacity and generates so much wealth within the US that without it the totla economy would colapse - what a sorry affair for ANY COUNTRY! On closing just so you know, Australia's GDP PPP is now higher than the US, and its' dollar has appreciated from US0-56 about a year ago to US$1-10 in May 2011 - SO WAKE UP - IT IS NOT A CRITICISM IT IS A WKAE UP CALL! EMBRACE THE TRUTH AND CHANGE OUR COUNTRY!

@Ian. Thanks. It's always hard to say hard things and I was very careful when writing this article to make absolutely sure that my sources were good.

What a great hub! It's way past the time for the average American to pay attention to the facts. Sadly, I don't think that this will happen any time soon. The average American is more interested in DWTS, what is going on in Hollywood and with its "stars", and with the Kardashians than in what really matters.

Ramsa1, The last census revealed that half of Americans were either living on the poverty line or below the poverty line. I think it was the world bank that has just said that it looks like a 30s type depression is on its way. Give it time..

Great hub as always, it is my impression when i came to the US back in 1972 the country was about 20 years ahead of the rest of the world in almost everything and now we must be at least 20 years behind.

Sophia Angelique Hub Author 2 months ago

mio cid. I think you're probably right. I think there are several things to remember. The 'forward' march of the country was probably the result of relative prosperity due to having the reserve currency plus German importing of scientists after WWII. Well - part of it, at least.

I definitely have found it way behind other countries since coming here in 2003.

To Sopnia Angelique: This hub is extremely well researched. A friend of mine also stated that the European educational system is vastly superior to that of the United States. She attended school in Germany, including the university level. She was an army brat and her family transferred to the United States in her college sophomore year. She even remarked that American higher education was equivalent to that of a secondary education in Europe.

A former coworker of mine who lived in England, verified that Americans have the shortest vacations of the developed nations. He cited that is was not unusual for Europeans to have four to six weeks paid vacations. When I first heard of this, I was totally nonplussed to put it mildly. This is an excellent hub as usual. You always present excellent hubs.

Thank you, GMWilliams. To my advantage, of course, I am not American and was educated in South Africa and England and have lived in South Africa, Germany, England, and some other countries. Likewise my daughter. So I have first hand experience of a lot of it. However, that said, I wouldn't want my personal experience to color what I write so I always research.

When I came to the States in 2003, I went to College. I was shocked to discover I was learning things at College level that I had learnt in South Africa in 4th or 6th grade. Likewise, my daughter was simply repeating at College what she had learnt at high school in England.

American health issues, obesity, and mental illness, all of which are the highest (and most expensive) in the world, are a direct result of the lack of rest and recreation, the extreme competitiveness, and, I suppose, the marketing propaganda that is constantly fed to citizens.

However, in order to know that, one has to have something to compare it to. If one has never lived outside the USA, then one doesn't know... And if one is constantly told one lives in the best country in the world, I guess one believes it.

One of my former supervisors also said the same thing! I liked your intelligent hub. Thank you again!
