Astrology, True or False?
75Astrology for the Unbeliever
Many understand astrology to be solely a method of foretelling the future, i.e. a horoscope. This is not true. Astrology also claims to explain the character of individuals via a natal chart and to determine whether a couple will be happily compatible, i.e. synastry.
The question is what works, and what does not work, and if it does work, how can one best use astrology, and what must one avoid, and of course, is astrology a scam?
Astrology Natal Chart
MANY FACTORS - CONSTELLATIONS AND PLANETS
In determining someone’s character, far more than the sun
sign is involved. The natal chart details not only where the sun was when the
person was born, but where the other planets were as well. So, where Mercury
(communication), Venus (love and beauty), Mars (energy and sex), and all the
other planets are all give different aspects of one’s character.
TWELVE HOUSES
In addition, there
are twelve houses. So, for instance, if one’s sun sign was in the first house,
it would mean that one was very self involved, but if one’s sun sign was in the
twelfth house, it would mean one would be very involved with institutions and
be more spiritual. Bear in mind that not only one’s sun sign is in one of those
twelve houses, but the other ten planets as well. The reason there are ten
planets is that Mercury rules both Virgo and Gemini while Venus rules both
Taurus and Libra.
ASPECTS
ther complexity is that the way planets and
constellation interact with each other also determine different meaning. So, if
the sun sign was opposite one’s moon sign, then it would mean that one’s
conscious (sun) mind was either conflicting with one’s unconscious (moon) mind,
or that one had an easier time understanding it because there was a direct
pathway. Planets and constellations can be next to each other, opposite each
other, in a triangular relationship with each other many more aspects.
In order to draw a natal chart, the exact date, time and place need to be known.
All in all, far from a sun sign determining one’s character, it is only a very small aspect of one’s character. The many different potential charts in astrology mean that it’s highly unlikely for two people to be the same.
So, is it accurate or not?
After studying it for 18 months nearly two decades ago, I would say that the natal chart is pretty accurate.
How to Best Use Astrology for your Well Being
Knowing the future is not the best use of astrology. The best use of astrology is knowing yourself. The gains to be made by a knowledge of your natal chart are well worth having. They can often be life changing and resolve issues that have previously held one back.
It can take a decade in counseling to determine what is behind one’s behavior. With a natal chart, it can be determined in minutes. It is particularly useful when times are difficult and, regardless of one’s efforts, nothing seems to work. An understanding of what one’s abilities are, where one’s difficulties lies, enables one to rationally determine a better pathway to reach one’s goals.
Synastry
BRITISH TV COMPARISON SHOW
In London, around 2002 I think, I was watching a series of
TV programs on whether the successful relationships could be predicted. Each
week there were new couples on the show, and each week astrologers, psychics
and psychologists determined which couple would last. A year later, when going
back to see which couples were still together, it appeared that astrology was
the most successful at determining outcome while psychics were the least
successful.
FIRE AND AIR; WATER AND EARTH
Synastries in order to establish whether two people are compatible.
The accepted understanding is that fire and air are compatible with each other
and water and earth are compatible with each other. Leo, Sagittarius and Aries are fire signs. Libra, Aquarius and Gemini are air signs. Taurus, Capricorn and Virgo are earth signs. Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio are water signs.
MOON SIGNS
Taken a step further, if the moon signs (emotions)
are, in a compatible aspect with each other, then the relationships will work.
My personal experience of that is that this is not accurate.
MARS (SEX) VENUS (LOVE)
I have found something else to be accurate, and that is
chemistry. Chemistry is dependent on which constellations Mars (sex) and Venus
(love) frequent. I have found this incredibly accurate for myself. If I meet
someone and there is instant chemistry, so far 100% of those people have had
Mars in Scorpio. I did read a book about this but I cannot recall the title of
the book.
Is Astrology a Scam?
If by scam, what is meant is to part the user from their money, then astrology is no more a scam than a shopkeeper with the same intent.
Astrologers do a fair amount of training and learning in order to be able to give you the information that they have. Some astrologers do not have the comprehensive knowledge of astrology that other astrologers do. This makes them beginners, not scam artists.
Does believing in Astrology make someone superstitious? No more than believing in anything else. To believe in anything without the facts to prove it makes someone superstitious.
Learning the basics about astrology isn’t difficult. There might even be a book that’s called astrology for dummies somewhere! Personally, whenever I want to learn something, I go find the ‘for dummies’ series. That’s because they are written in clear English and everything is explained one step at a time. I always think that the true touch of genius is to make something so simple that even a child can understand it!
Horoscopes.
Can astrology tell the future? My studies say no, they can’t.
I have two reasons.
NOT ACCURATE
Firstly, I followed several different horoscopes, made for
me specifically, for eighteen months, and not a single item came true. These
horoscopes were cast by both individuals and computers, in South Africa and in
England. Firstly, they were all different, and secondly, the events of my life
were so completely different to what was being said, that I couldn’t even give
credence to the slightest possibility.
NOT PROBABLE
My second reason is this. If it were possible to foretell
the future, then it would mean that there is no free will. In other words, when
things are predestined, it means in order to get there, an exact sequence of
events needs to take place. If even one of those events don’t take place, then
the outcome will be different. If on the other hand, we all have the ability to
make our own decisions (free will), then it means that the future cannot be set
in stone because our every decision will determine a new outcome. It’s either
one or the other. And while I would love to know the future, I hate the thought
that I have no control over my outcomes.
