Democrats vs Republicans Hiatus: Bipartisan Politics Needed.

Liberal and Republican Name Calling
I have to confess to you that since coming to America I have been shocked that people only see things in two colors – Liberal and Conservative. Imagine if people saw things only in black and white. All the color that lent variation to the world, as well as revealed its incredibly complexity would be lost. Something like that is happening when an issue only draws on one of two responses: “It’s the Democrats. They’re running this country into the ground.” “It’s the Republicans. They’re running this country into the ground.” Bipartisan politics are essential. If bipartisan politics don't become the norm, then the two sides will continue to be played against the middle, and eventually that will end in the destruction of the whole.

Anatomy of an Issue
Traditionally, those who want abortion to stop are considered conservative and those who want abortion decision to remain with the mother are considered to be democrat. The conservatives insist that the state should not be paying for abortion and want to legislate against abortion because it’s murder. The Democrats insist that every woman has the right to decide how to treat her own body and that if she has been raped and is unable to afford payment for abortion, then a state aided abortion clinic is necessary.

So, if someone states that the state shouldn’t pay for abortions then it is assumed that the statement is made by a Republican. And if someone else states that the mother has the right to make her own decision about her own body, then it is assumed that it is a liberal statement.

Yet, neither is correct.

The former might be someone holding middle ground who believes that while a mother has the right to make her decisions for own body, she also has the responsibility to pay for those decisions.

The latter might be a Republican convinced of the same thing.

Reasons Why It’s NOT Republican or Liberal
In short, it is the height of short sightedness to assume that because one has a certain view, that one is attached to the political party because it holds that view. The following reasons are listed for that statement.

1. The issue will probably have many parts and there are not only two sides to it. The issue has many sides to it.

2. Because some of what one believes fits with Republican policy, it does not mean that all of what one believes fits in with Republican policy.

3. People who hold middle ground select the candidate – not the party - in times of election. It is not based on party politics but on the strength of character of the presidential candidate. So, for instance, when McCain selected Palin for the VP position, so many feared McCain dying in office and Palin attaining the highest office in the land, that they switched to Obama.

Mostly, Issues are Apolitical
The fact that America is either nearing bankruptcy or is already bankrupt (same as the banks) is not a political issue. It will affect both Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, and others. If people will debate the issue instead of throwing out inflammatory, unhelpful remarks like, “It’s the liberal left who are responsible for this state of affairs” or “Its the GOP who did this,” perhaps, solutions can be found. Virtually, all issues are apolitical. More to the point, there are NOT two solutions to the problem – the Republican answer and the Liberal response. There are many different solutions. Until partisan products becomes the norm, those that represent these different political parties will continue to spar until the issue, unresolved, destroys them. Issues are like that. If one doesn’t resolve the problem, they eventually become out of control.

How Can the Left and the Right Resolve their Differences and Work towards the Good of the Community?
Strangely enough, this will happen when the community as a whole lets go their hatred towards those who think differently to themselves. It will also loosen its grip when those that are still adherents of this limited thinking stop blaming everybody but themselves. Generally, people who insist on blaming others (and not human nature, in general), don’t want to believe they are in anyway guilty. The truth is that everybody is guilty and bears some responsibility for what is happening now. Events don’t happen in isolation.

Eradicating the Liberal or Republican Mind-set.
Probably the biggest factor in eliminating this very limited and destructive mind-set, is early education in teaching kids to separate issues from party politics. Until that is done, party politics will probably destroy the country before the issues are resolved.Essentially, the name calling between these political parties needs to stop because right now it's the pot calling the kettle black. Until they stop the name calling, the issues cannot be resolved. It's essential to introduce bipartisan politics for the survival and wellbeing of all.

You are exactly correct Sophia. Both sides are yelling at each other from the other side and name calling. All they see is their own point of view and they shut their minds off to any other opinion. Both sides need to compromise and come to sensible solutions for our myriad of serious problems such as the huge budget deficit. One side wants drastic cuts which will hurt only the poor. The other side wants huge tax hikes which will destroy investment and consumer spending. How about taking half from one side and half from the other and there's your compromise. Instead they just snipe at each other. It's pathetic and destroying this country. Great Hub. Right on target.

You make a lot of valid, common sense points here. Both parties seem to disagree with each other on just about every issue. The country should come first and party loyalties should be put on the shelf so elected officials can do the job they are paid to do. Very good hub, well thought out. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

All the pretty words above don't. won't and never will solve the problems we face. What problem? The federal government has driven us to the edge of the cliff. So right now, the minority party wants to play dumb assed games because they lost the last election. They also failed to pass a budget when they had both houses and the Oval Office. Why? Because they were facing an election this past November. They lost anyway and now we see this boondoggle up there. The fact is we have run out of checks. We sure don't need to order more.

I am a fiscal conservative. I can stand on my own two feet and have my entire life. I don't wan't a Nanny to take care of my every need. I also don't want to have to pick up any part of the tab for the leeches that have permeated society, and bred over and over again, since the great LBJ concept of "The Great Society." If it isn't quite apparent to you that it is a failed concept then that is your problem, not mine.

Our government is out of control - all of them. Pointing fingers isn't going to solve anything. It's all blah, blah, blah. I am also a Constitutionalist who knows we have strayed so far away from the law of the land that it is truly pathetic. When my own liberal, bonehead Representative goes on national TV and admits that most of what they do isn't according to the Constitution, I know someone needs a head space adjustment.

If we don't get our fiscal house in order, we're screwed. That's everybody.

@The Frog Prince. Yes, the Federal Government has drive the US to the edge of the cliff... regardless of whether it's conservative or liberal... as I was saying.

I have deleted and will continue to delete anyone who plays party politics on this page. I don't care what the 'liberal' viewpoint is or what the GOP is guilty of. I'm sick and tired of the two idiotic sides. Whoever wants to go and support their pet party is welcome to - but not on this page!

"It's essential to introduce bipartisan politics for the survival and wellbeing of all."....Perfectly said. An Eagle can't fly with one wing. We are becoming seriously and dangerously divided. The fumes of anger need only a spark of ignorance.

I lean towards conservative ideals but I also understand the need for liberal ideals to balance the powers. The extreme from either wing is always self serving, arrogant and useless towards managing any worthwhile issue.

Great Hub - I have long said that hurling slogans at each other across the barricades will do nothing to help bring down the barricades, or to solve the problems on either side.

I know this Hub is about US politics, but the principle is more general than that.

Thanks for the great read.

Love and peace

I very reluctantly vote for one of the parties, doesn't matter which, because the other party just seems so corrupt and stupid, thought the party I vote for is only marginally better. The state I live in is basically one party, and rivals California for the worst economics in the nation. It's a sad situation.

GNelson. I think many people share these ideas. Perhaps they don't write about them, but I think many people would like to get past the party politics and just have a good administrative system!

Here we go again, without bringing politics into it, the only reason I detest liberals is because of their hipocrosy.

Just one example and, I believe in the right to abortion where a woman was raped or incest, I however aldo believe in the right to live. Here I will compare with the right to take life, where a life has been taken.

If you murder or rape, then there should be nothing better than the gallows for you. I do have a problem with women who will abort, "I wanted a girl, not a boy"

Liberals support the right of murdering that unborn human, but then they will absolutely fight for the right of a murderer to live.

B.S. that criminal has the same right he/she afforded their victim and, unlike that little baby made a decision that affected another person and loved ones.

There can be no compromise on that, the same can be said for the spending of tax payer's money on those that do not deserve it. And, before you say that I have no feeling for those tha suffer, I do. I am for assistance, but at the same time I reject the notion that you give handouts. Spending on infrastructure is a goverment obligation, feeding the lazy is not.

Don't tell me it is because I grew up with an advantage. I had to get up at 4 in the morning, do my tasks and then be at schhol until two, whereafte, before I would be able to study all that happens again. Liberals believe that should you be qualified to a certain level and there is no work at that level, taking up a lesser task is unfair, foodstamps and benefits is more to their liking.

There are democratic viewpoints which I support, there are conservative viewpoints that I don't and, there we can compromise. However, compromise just for the sake of it, is no solution at all. A balanced and fair budget is a must and, even a goverment do not have the moral right to spend more than it could afford.

It does not have the right to expect a compromise on that, as it affects millions, who have no recourse, except at the voting booth and then, there the illiterate can also make a cross, which affects me

s8demon, I'm not going to respond to this because what you have said is clearly described in the article. That is the exact GOP view that the article was detailing. And, of course, a Democrat would have the exact response in the article I mentioned. Thanks for proving that everything I said in the article was true! :)

Voted up and interesting. You are correct that it is a blame game in American politics as it probably is in other countries as well. However, American politics have become divided with a mentality of "you're either with us or against us." Thinking and acting like that ends up resolving nothing. Ted Kennedy, D Senator from Massachusetts was a good example of a Statesman who knew how to negotiate, compromise and ultimately put through the agenda at hand. Now, our country is so divided that they mock the president as a Muslim or unchristian or not really being an American. There are hate spewing machines on both sides of the aisle and it seems as though the days of debate and compromise have been cast aside. I certainly hope we get our act together before it is too late. Thank you also for not allowing party politics in your comment section. My hat is off to you.
