The reason he reached that conclusion was because that was the point at which the Mayan calendar ended. According to those of a more academic bent, the reason the Mayan calendar stopped rather abruptly at that point was because the Mayans were conquered by the Spanish. Still, the idea that the world was going to end in 2012 caught on and, very soon, there were a lot of predictions for 2012. This article sums up the many different predictions for 2012.

Plunging Meteorite Kills Off the Earth in 2012
This prophesy or prediction for 2012 is told by both the Mayan texts and the Kolbrin bible. If you haven’t heard of the Kolbrin bible, don’t worry. It appeared rather mysteriously in 1992 with someone claiming that it had been protected by the Hope Trust for 850 years.

According to those who believe that the Mayans didn’t continue to write their calendar after December, 21^st, 2012, that is the day the world will end. That is the day a giant sun spot will wipe out the world.

There are a number of astrological predictions for 2012. According to some, Obama will win 2012. Then, a date of particular importance is June 24th 2012. Apparently, the last time there was a configuration similar to this in the heavens, it was the 30s, and Hitler and Stalin rose to prominence. However, depending on which group you believe, some of these aliens will heal everybody and show show people how to live, while others will wage all out war on planet earth.

Someone by the name of David Wilcox believes that alien ships will harvest the world of good souls in 2012 leaving the bad behind to have a thoroughly miserable time.

Facebook will reach 1 billion users; Google Plus won’t catch up; and early adopters of social networking will grow weary of the web. The greater the dominance of advertising in social networking, the greater the outcry will be with regard to privacy. Privacy in social networking becomes a very big issue. It becomes even more so closer to the election.

Messiahs Return and the Final Battles Between Good and Evil
According to the Kabbalah, Jesus will be returning in 2012. Tibetan Buddhists (Shambala) predict a great battle between good and evil in another dimension. So people on earth will miss it. Hindus believe that Bhagwan Kalki will return in 2012, and that all evil will be swept from the world.

Both have works that have been repeatedly reinterpreted by those who are determined to find a time and place for the end of the world. Actually, Edgar Case predicted the end of the world in 1998 when the poles were supposed to shift and the world was supposed to topple over backwards. As this didn’t happen, we had better focus on Nostradamus and his predictions for 2012. Although many of Nostradumus’ prophesies have been predicted to be on various dates, those days have come and gone, and the latest Nostradamus prophesies are his (apparently) predictions for 2012. He suggests an enormous asteroid crashing into the earth and annihilating everybody on earth. There is also some suggestion in his work that the anti-christ will arrive in 2012.

Time magazine has also made some predictions for 2012. They say that the Texas Rangers will win the world series and Tiger Wood will make a come back. Windows 8 will be launched and more people will be streaming TV from their Internet.

Billions of people the world over seem to want to know when the world is going to end. There is a very simple reason why it's not possible to know what the future will bring. That's because the future isn't planned. The future happens as a consequences of the deeds we do today combined with the millions and billions of deeds done by forces of nature, other animals, and other human beings. However, that said, it is highly unlikely that anything out of the norm will happen in 2012 or any other year.
